Dane Sanderson for Council
Hello friends, family and most importantly my Chak relatives! As a proud member of the Chakastaypasin Band of the Cree Nation, I am excited to announce that I am putting my name forward to run for Chak Council in the upcoming election.
Since March 2021, I have been deeply involved with our Nation, not only as Chair of the Working Trust Commission but also as Chair of the Communication Commission. In these roles, I have worked to keep our membership informed, becoming a trusted source of information for our People. I promise to continue being that source of open communication, but instead of waiting for updates, I will be at the table, helping to make tough decisions for our Nation and sharing information with you more easily.
In 2015, I received my Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Marketing from the University of Regina. I am happily married to my wife, Magon, and together we have two beautiful children. I also own a small business that has done very well over the last few years.
Over the past year, many Chak members have encouraged me to run for Chief. After lengthy discussions with my wife and family, I have decided not to pursue the Office of the Chief at this time. The time, travel, and commitment required for that role are too much for where I am in life right now. My children are still young, and their activities and my involvement in their lives are my top priority. Additionally, my business is not yet at a stage where I can fully step away from it. However, one day, I do plan to run for Chief.
That said, I was also asked to run for Council and that is what I have decided to do this term. I will be campaigning alongside Chelsey Stonestand, who will be running for Chief. Chelsey and I share many of the same viewpoints, and together we are ready to bring a new generation of leadership that Chakastaypasin deserves. We plan to visit multiple communities where most of our members live and explain our vision with the members. We will also host Zoom nights to share our vision and reach as many members as possible.
I am putting my full endorsement behind Chelsey as our next Chief, and I am asking everyone who supported or encouraged me to run for Chief this term to please vote for Chelsey. Together, we are committed to leading our Nation into a stronger future.
Our Nation is at a pivotal point. We will soon be receiving our settlement funds, and there will be many tough decisions to make. As we continue through the deamalgamation process, Chakastaypasin will one day be recognized as its own Nation again by Canada. Chief and Council will be tasked with building our Nation from the ground up, and we are ready to help with this important work.
Thank you for your support, and I look forward to connecting with you throughout this journey. Please share with our Chak Family and if you have any questions or would like to talk, please reach out to me!
We believe in the potential of our community to embrace its identity, define its future, and create a better world for future generations.
